Arthur's Chambers, Citadel, Camelot, Monday Morning Fandom Time

The whole mess was over and done with, and now Arthur had even managed to sweep the last scraps of trouble under the rug. It had been trying, and it had been bloody dangerous, and how could he have been so stupid to begin with?

He had all this adrenaline still coursing through his body, and the morning's training had only taken the edge off. So now that things had been settled, and spoken through with his father, he was in his room. Prying bits of rock off the wall with his sword.

While brooding.

This was a spectacular combination.

"...did the wall offend you?" Merlin asked, frowning at Arthur as he set down freshly laundered clothing onto Arthur's bed.

A fresh, tiny piece of rock crumbled away from the wall. Arthur looked away from it. "No, of course not."

"...right." Merlin was dubious. Look at his dubious face.

Arthur dropped his sword, and got up from the alcove in which he'd been seated.

"Merlin," he said, as he paced towards the boy, "You are by far the stupidest bloody sorcerer I have ever met."

Merlin took a step back, reaching behind himself for the table he was about to run into. "I didn't mean to do it!"

"You need to be more careful," Arthur snapped. Crowding Merlin's space? Oh yes, he was. "This is not a game."

"You think I don't know that?" Seriously?

"You were certainly not acting like it!"

Well. At least this one was probably not as bad as the tongue-lashing Uther was about to receive from Gaius...

"I stopped it!"

"It shouldn't have happened in the first place," Arthur said, slamming a hand into the table behind Merlin in irritation. "Gaius was nearly executed, Merlin! What were you thinking?! Oh, nevermind-- you weren't!"

And Arthur'd worried himself into a knot so tight they'd need a sword to get through it.

"I wanted to be myself for all of a few moments," Merlin snapped, twisting to get out of the area Arthur was now in.

Lovely. No, really brilliant.

Arthur sent him a crabby look. "And you couldn't have done that without openly casting spells?!" he asked.

"It was a mistake," Merlin replied sulkily. "People make them."

"You can't afford to keep making them, Merlin," Arthur said, some of the anger fading from his voice. Mostly because he'd spent days worrying, and now after the first rush of anger, he found himself tired.

But how will half the story arcs happen?

"I'm not perfect, Arthur," he replied, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I can't promise not to make anymore mistakes."

... Presumably, very differently, at the rate they were actually doing these mysterious things like 'learning from what has happened previously'.

"Well, you'd damn well better try harder," Arthur said, turning around till he was leaning against the table himself. He crossed his arms. "No displays of magic in public unless you absolutely have to."

"No more insane Witchfinders either."

"Hopefully father will think twice before hauling another one into our business from now on," Arthur said, deflating visibly.

Merlin sighed, looking over at him out of the corner of his eye. "Next time let's not have guests around for this sort of thing."

Arthur pulled a face. "Agreed," he said. He cast a look in Merlin's direction.

There was another glance before Merlin slowly took a step closer to him. Just one step for now.

Arthur didn't move, but he uncrossed his arms, dropping his hand loosely onto the table beside him, his body half-turning towards Merlin in the process. "Merlin, come here, you impossible imbecile," he sighed.

"You could always come here too, you know." But Arthur was lucky that Merlin was making his way over. So damn lucky.

"Shut up," Arthur told him, expressively, and reached for him as soon as he was close.

It wasn't a hug! Mostly.
