Room 303, Sunday Morning

Arthur did not awake to the feeling of having slept particularly well. His head wasn't pounding, which was a good sign, but his brain felt like it still wanted to seep out of his head into something nice and unconscious of the sweetest kind.

He was usually an early riser. He was trying to remember why he didn't feel inclined to be so right now.

Of course, that's when he opened his eyes and found two very curious blue eyes peering back at him. "You awake yet?" Gawain demanded. Yes, demanded.

Oh, hell. "Go back to sleep," he ordered.

"But sir," Gawain said, plaintatively, "It's time for morning exercise."

Arthur was going to murder the world.

"I can!" she exclaimed, then added to Leto: "It's like a miniature coriolis storm. All the wind patterns were quite complicated to figure out."

"Er," said Arthur. This was entirely unfair. He should not have to deal with this. "That's-- my roommate's. It's the rules of the castle. You've got to share your rooms."

And he was only barely refraining from mentioning how incredibly stupid he still thought that was.

"Which is ridiculous."

"You need to be careful with that," Merlin said, lowering his voice and bending down to be at eye level with her. "It's dangerous here."

"Kings don't share," Arawn said, very solemnly climbing up onto the bed.

Victoria objected to being ignored in the middle of a conversation. "It is impolite to ignore people who are debating matters with you."

"Arawn be careful!" He'd only been climbing on everything in Merlin's room. Why was he so well behaved here and not there?

Arthur would've appreciated it if Arawn found some kind of-- way to make this clear to Leto (possibly involving punting the little tosser out of his window) but he did, in fact, remain quiet on that fact.

"I'm not King yet," he tried, shooting a helpless glance at Merlin.

... an imperiously helpless glance.

That Arthur had a son with Dinah was not as strange as him having a daughter with Merlin. Leto cleared his throat. "Perhaps that means Dinah expects me to have our daughter stay here," he replied.

"You're always king, father." Well, he'd been all of Arawn's life.

"Arawn, how about you show Arthur your sword work?" Merlin said in a desperate hope of distracting them both.

Leto hoped Merlin would have some luck with that, because, for once they did agree. "Yes, it is."

"If you're that concerned about that area of manners, I suggest you ask your father for his opinion," Arthur told Victoria. Dune could not have been more dry. "And I suggest you speak to Dinah about that."

And that made Hunith burst out laughing.

"Not yet," Arthur repeated.

Merlin gained another look. Was that really the best he could come up with? "Right," he said, "Your swordcraft. How are you doing on your training?"

Merlin sighed and reached out to take her arm to bring the girl closer. "Hunith, I'm serious. You could harm someone."

'Like your father over there' he didn't add.

"You are evading the topic," Victoria told him. "And without finesse. That is inexcusable." Not that she was much concerned with finesse, but that was something Irulan used to scold her for.

"I will," Leto replied. "But either way, I have four children here and some of them will have to stay in this room."

"Actually, I managed to answer your question and insult your father's manners at the same time," Arthur said, somewhat cheerfully, "So I'd say my finesse is fine. As is the nursery thing, provided you remember we don't have space for all seven."

Interesting way to distract them from a serious subject, Leto noted. "Yes, you could." He couldn't keep an eye on her all the time, and here he was responsible. Well, Merlin was too, he expected.

Arawn grinned widely and jumped on the bed once. In a princely way.

"'mma be the best knight ever!"

Merlin just went to lean against a nice wall. Thank god there was someone else to watch the boy now.

"He's a page," He added tiredly.

"I know," she said. "I'm careful. It's hard to resist." Then her face lit up again. "But it's the only thing you agree on!"

"Of course he is," Arthur said, but it didn't hold quite as much confidence as he was going for. "He is my son." As insane as that sounded. He looked up at the child next. "Come and sit down," he ordered.

It wasn't immediately obvious which one of them he was talking to.

Merlin shot Leto a look. "I can't say I'd doubt that. But how about if you tone it down for him, we can practice in the preserve?"

"Really, I found that rather too simple," Victoria replied. "Have you ever studied rhetoric? Too simple and you come across as vulgar and populist."
